Organic Eggs

I know I’m inviting much scorn and derision from many of you out there, but I’m going to admit it: I’m not totally taken in by the addage that organic is necessarily better. I know, I know, I’m going to be getting some angry emails, but that’s really how I feel.

And this was never brought more to the front of my mind than when I asked a friend to pick up a dozen eggs on their way over (as I was laid up with a foot injury) and they showed up with these organic eggs:
And I saw that the price tag read $5.99! 6 bucks?—are you kidding me?! For a dozen eggs? What the hell!!!!

Were the eggs big and fresh and have brightly colored yokes? Yes they did. But honestly–they weren’t anywhere near as nice as the fresh farm eggs I pick up from time to time (for about $2.50/dz)–and they seemed only equal to the ‘regular’ eggs I buy at the grocery store…except for the fact they cost 3 times as much. So in my opinion—they were a total rip off!

I truly don’t feel that either the omelets or the two cakes I made with these eggs were in any way improved by the ‘organic’ eggs. So there it is–just my humble opinion, feel free to think me unenlightened! And though I know they certianly didn’t hurt me or those recipes in any way…for as long as cost vs. value is a factor, I’m going to skip the organic eggs.

And they were no friend to the environment either–check out that extra layer of packaging:

Just seems to fly in the face of that organic lifestyle….but hey, that’s just me! *smile
